Bluegrass Ensembles

A chance to learn how to play your instrument with others in a bluegrass jam setting, right here in Boulder, CO

DAtes and info for fall classes will be posted shortly. Our fall session start on the first week of september

Summer Jam Classes

This Summer Harmony will be hosting a series of drop-in “bluegrass jam classes” . These classes are intended to help students improve upon their creativity, ear training, and spontaneity of playing songs that they may have never played before.

Each week students are encouraged to bring a song that they would like to play with the group. This could be a printout with lyrics, or you can teach the group the chords if you know them already. The instructor also has a large collection of songs to share as well.

The class is designed for students that have already been playing bluegrass, and are looking to improve their playing and listening skills. You aren’t required to take breaks (or solos), but it is highly encouraged. The class is geared toward intermediate players. Beginners are welcome to join, but it is recommended that you be able to successfully switch between chords at moderate tempos. If you have questions about your playing level, please email us (see link above).

This class is designed to mimic the “bluegrass picks” that are found around town. The difference is that this is guided instruction. You get to play many tunes, but will receive feedback and advise on how to improve your skills. Our main intent is to have our participants have a ton of fun and get better at the same time. We hope you can join us.

These classes are taught by Robby Loeb.

Each class is $20 You can pay at class or in advance by clicking the link below

Classes take place on Wednesday at 5:30-7pm on the following dates:

  • May 29th

  • June 5th

  • June 19th

  • June 26th

  • July 10th

  • July 17th

Bluegrass Ensemble 102

This class is designed for bluegrass students who are getting more comfortable with taking "breaks" and playing rhythm at moderate tempos. If you are looking to learn the secret hand shakes of bluegrass that aren't explained at the jams, then this class will take that mystery away and make you a more competent and informed player. By the way, it's a lot of fun too.

These classes will cover more material than the beginner ensembles, in the same amount of time. There will be focus on kick-offs/endings, what role your instrument plays in the group (rhythm and lead), encouragement to learn melodies by ear, potentially taking improvised breaks, and much more. All of these elements will be catered to your comfort level.

Prior to the start of class a few fiddle tunes will be picked by the instructor so that you can start practicing before class starts. Each student will have the opportunity to pick a song that they would like to play with the class. Those songs will be learned, and performed by the whole group. After the last class meeting the group will play in public at a Boulder location.

Bluegrass Ensemble 101

This class is designed for the beginning bluegrass player.  In order to get the most out of this class, you should be able to switch between chords and/or hold rhythm on your instrument.  The class will focus on how to play in a group setting successfully.  You will learn how to kick-off and end a song, what role your instrument plays while taking a solo and playing rhythm, what standard bluegrass song format is (The I, IV, V), and much more.

If you are looking to learn the secret hand shakes of bluegrass that aren't explained at the jams, then this class will take that mystery away and make you a more competent and informed player.  By the way, it's a lot of fun too.
