Mike Garavel- Jazz, Classical, Funk
I have always loved music! About 15 years ago I started playing the trumpet. I had already been listening to artists such as The Beatles and Miles Davis thanks to the help of my parents. But learning trumpet changed my path, and since then my exposure to music has become a vast collection of sounds and artists.
I currently live in Boulder, Colorado, but grew up in West Hartford, Connecticut. In 2015 I graduated from University of Colorado Boulder with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance (Trumpet) and an emphasis in Jazz. I also studied Music Education for two years at Western Connecticut University before switching degrees and transferring to CU Boulder in 2013.
I've performed with big bands, concert bands, and orchestras for about 13 years, and also performed in jazz combos for several years during college. Throughout high school and college I had the opportunity to play with some incredible jazz musicians such as Curtis Fuller, Mulgrew Miller, and Jimmy Greene. I also studied with Jimmy Greene at WCSU. Other teachers I've studied with include Dave Scott and Brad Goode.
My teaching experience covers a wide range of jazz, classical and trumpet specific techniques. For several years I taught private trumpet lessons in Connecticut and Colorado. My favorite part about teaching is discussing theory/harmony, techniques, and simply the way music makes you feel.
Over the past couple of years, I have been learning how to produce, arrange and compose music for a wide variety of instruments. Three full length EP's can be found on my local band's (Cave Dewllers) bandcamp website. Cave Dwellers has performed a few shows in Colorado, with me on Trumpet and Piano.
Spreading knowledge, and learning about music with others is what keeps me going. Teaching inspires me to continue down the musical path. I'd love to sit down with you and make some music!
